Alagadi Beach - Caretta Caretta
Alagadi is one of the cleanest and longest shores of North Cyprus. Located approximately 17km east of Kyrenia. A well known area of North Cyprus for two reasons; firstly for the long stretch of public beach that is enjoyed by locals and tourists. Secondly, as the headquarters of the Marine and Turtle Conservation Project of Northern Cyprus whose base is located at “The Goat Shed”. This is where visitors meet and are taken to the beach to watch the hatching of the turtles. Northern Cyprus' beaches are very important for nesting turtles.
Students from different universities of the world voluntarily arrive to North Cyprus every year and stay for a full month, in order to help these green turtles lay their eggs peacefully; to prevent any light or fire from being started at the sand; to prevent the eggs of these green turtles to be effected by anything else; and most importantly, to help facilitate the turtles hatching from the eggs to reach the shore quicker and safer. Entrance to the beach is free of charge.
The green and loggerhead turtles are listed under the endangered species list, and North Cyprus is working very hard to help protect these gentle creatures. SPOT has joined forces with interested and caring groups from a number of British universities to watch the turtles progress and help the baby turtles safely reach the ocean on various beaches in Kyrenia and the Karpaz peninsula.
If you would like to get a little closer and observe these fascinating turtles, by joining the Society for the Protection of Turtles (SPOT), located in Alagadi on Turtle Beach. During your time with SPOT, you will be able to help the turtles by joining the team on their nightly patrols of the sandy beach and also watch on as the team make surveys night and dawn on the turtle everyday to keep up to date with the latest occurrences.
